How to Evaluate a Data
Learn the truth and make
an educated decision!
Here we will expose some of the false promises and misperceptions
that most people are subjected to while researching a data recovery
(Just remember. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably
1.) "Free Evaluation."
You get what you pay for - you know your drive is broken, why
send it to someone just to have them tell you what you already
know. Once your drive is in their hands, or at their facilities,
you are at their mercy. You can then expect a phone call explaining
to you that there is an additional fee for any invasive
level evaluation and additional cost for parts.
2.) "FREE Phone Analysis of damaged Media."
Nobody can possibly know the condition of the platters in the
Head Disk Assembly without looking inside the drive!
3.) "Guaranteed estimates."
They guarantee it could cost from $600.00 to $3600.00
4.) "Success rate of 93%."
Exaggerated success rates are common in the data recovery
industry; Unfortunately there are some circumstances that
make it impossible for anyone to recover data no matter what
techniques are used.
5.) "We Can Get Your Data Back...Guaranteed!"
It's impossible to guarantee such a thing or they would advertise
100% success rate
6.) "24 to 48 hour turnaround."
While this is possible, it's not true a great deal of the time.
At times, specific parts are required that may or may not be
in stock and can take a few days just to locate a donor drive
and that doesn't include shipping time.
7.) "FREE Online Quote Consultations."
Nobody in the data recovery business charges for a quote consultation.
8.) "Will beat any competitors' price."
Some "garage labs" out there are charging $99.00 for an attempted
recovery. This is more than likely a basic computer technician
with a data recovery software program that might work. (It might
also damage your hard drive to the point that no one could recover.)
Get the $99.00 quote and offer it to the company making this
promise: "Will beat any competitors' price". Good luck!
9.) "We guarantee the lowest price in the world for hard
This is quite a statement however; you get what you pay for. If
the cost of a recovery exceeds the price you were quoted you are
not going to get the level of service you expected. No company goes
into business to lose money. Your drive will be deemed unrecoverable
and returned to you. This is why many other data recovery companies
state that they have recovered files from a drive that another data
recovery company could not retrieve. The files were in fact retrievable
from the start.
10.) "No one has more experience at recovering data."
Take note of when the company was founded. Are they simply a
computer repair store who 'resells' data recovery? There are
hundreds of fly by night companies claiming to perform data
recovery that come and go every year. Many times these websites
will lead you to believe they have recovered "thousands of gigabytes
of data" over so many years. Some websites will give the impression
that they have numerous locations in each and every city and
state. In reality, there are only a few companies that have
the resources to maintain, staff and operate multiple data recovery
locations. Make sure that wherever you send your hard drive
to is simply not one of their numerous drop-off locations.
We understand that if you are researching
data recovery services, you already have enough problems. Whoever
you decide to send your mission critical data to, make sure
it is a reputable company with a strong history of customer
satisfaction and success.
